I just tested the code with the most recent bash versions 4.0 and 4.1 from http://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/bash/:
4.0: Same issue. 4.1: Works fine. Please check whether either Ubuntu 9.10 can go to 4.1 or whether the fix can be ported down to 4.0.
