I was experiencing the same problem with the same messages in the syslog. However, as well as adding [ $REMOTE_ARGS = \'\' ] && REMOTE_ARGS="" to line 40 of /etc/init.d/lirc I also had to edit /etc/lirc/hardward.conf and change REMOTE_DEVICE="''" to REMOTE_DEVICE="/dev/lirc0"
