Thanks for your input

During the last weeks I did several changes
- changed the hard disk
- moved from ubuntu 8.04 LTS to a fresh installed ubuntu 9.10
- reinstalled latest flash player from adobe 
- cleaned the fan with a vacuum cleaner removing layers of dust

This lead to a situation where the critical shutdown does not occur anymore.
Whatever the original reason was (I guess it was the vacuum cleaner)

You may close the issue .... I will not take anymore actions on this
