** Description changed:

  Panel load of acpi applet (clips off soundevent playing the boot theme)
  is broken in Ed+Ubuntu on this laptop, with all available upgrades in
  place (386), disabling Gnome controls once upset (batt charging mode).
  
  So I tried Kubuntu, but this fails at step 5 of 6 in the Installer
- [bugfile to come..] - it can't seem to get the hda partition info up at
- all. This phase is slow in Ubuntu, but does partition correctly and
