Can you give more information please? Are you just not sure how to
properly update/upgrade programs? Did Mplayer work previously? Did any
of the programs mentioned above actually crash on you?

If you are unable to play certain video files with Mplayer then you
perhaps just need to install a certain codec. Try the ubuntu-restricted-
extras package in synaptic package manager(System->Admin->Synaptic).

If your programs are not the latest versions then that usually means
that you need to enable more repositories under your software sources
settings. For more info please see: https://help.ubuntu.com/8.10/add-
