I found the nvidia accelerated graphics driver version 185 and installed
it. I now can up my screen resolution to 1800 by 1440. Firefox is
working fine now. For other reasons, I have recently done a complete OS
reinstall. Now Ubuntu and Windows XP are on different hard drives (Make
sure to use at least a 20 GB partition for windows. Don't ask me how I
know!) That may have affected the problem as well.
It's fixed now though.

Changing screen resolutions with NVIDIA X Server window causes firefox to close
