I'm seeing the same on lucid with 2.6.32-13-generic (whereas
2.6.31-17-generic worked).

... and thus:
j...@sliver:~$ sudo ethtool -s eth0 wol g
Cannot set new wake-on-lan settings: Operation not supported
not setting wol
If this is happening with all e1000e NICs, it's a *very* serious problem
for server users of an LTS release.
