For anyone needing a workaround, the command "adduser" executed from the terminal can be used to add a new user. Type "adduser -help" for usage instructions.
Strangely, though, the new user created with this command does not show up in the users-admin GUI, nor does it show up in the list diaplayed at the login screen.
