I tried the kexec[1] workaround on a ASUS X50N with Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala), it /does/ reboot but then it warns about the fact it can't load the graphics card driver (nVidia Geforce 7000M) and it asks to start in low-res mode. I have the proprietary drivers enabled.
