Unfortunately linux-backports-modules-2.6.31 (running kernel 2.6.31-19-generic) does only solve some of the issues on the hardware of my flatmate, e.g. radio level seems to be shown alright now. But the wifi connection is still not very stable using both networkmanager and wicd. wicd seems to be more stable though.
What I have experienced while using wicd is that whenever the wifi list is refreshed the bandwith of ongoing downloads will drop to zero but the connection will remain. As far as I know, network-manager is running such scans automatically in background and at that times the connection may break then resulting in a less stable experience on the machine we have here. $ lspci|grep Wire 03:00.0 Network controller: Atheros Communications Inc.
