(second half of my comment):
There was no gnome nor kde nor hal running. The CD content had a wrong
md5sum afterwards. I have repeated this experiment a number of times.
The advice of the previous poster was to use something other than wodim. So I
tried, in the same environment:
cdrskin ubuntu-9.10-alternate.iso
This time everything worked right.
This is a clear hint that there is something wrong with wodim itself,
not the kernel or anything.
