In dapper-updates I've fixed the way the installer falls over if qtparted crashes; see bug 47194. The remainder is a qtparted bug. Jonathan, could you please investigate this? The string immediately before the crash comes from ped_file_system_open() failing (which is expected on NTFS); perhaps that will help narrow down the location of the crash.
