sorry for not being precise

here is a second try:

What I did: Whenever I start synaptic on my up2date lucid system synaptic
freezes while reading the package lists (at least it tells so in the statusbar
on the bottom of the window). The progressbar goes up to a tenth and stays
there. Synaptic does then not react on any Input (does not matter how much time
I throw at it).
what I expected:
that it does not freeze from beginning.
what I encountered:
synaptic does hang on the initial reading of package lists and the progressbar
on the right bottom corner stays at about a tenth.
initial reading of package lists causes my cpu-usage to go up. and the load
goes to avg 2,1. while memory-usage stay at about it's previous amount.
it does not react on any close-command issued through the window dekoration
system or the application list in the panel.

The system is pretty old (celeron with 1.8Ghz and about 500MB RAM), but
as told the memory seems not to be the problem, as it does not change
while tis problem occurs (monitored through the gnome-system-monitor). I
attached parts of lshw printout for more detailed(?) infos.
