Interestingly enough on the Windows side there's an updated audio driver which lists this in its changelog:
(Fix) Better control the audio subsystem and internal speaker if the system experiences an improper shutdown Not sure if it is related... Will try removing both batteries, plus looking through the hardware service manual to see if there's any kind of reset button/jumper on the board.
