Ah, I see. It's in the way Ubuntu One synchronises directories outside
its 'base' directory. Maybe Ubuntu One should get support for using XDG
variables in the name somehow?

It could be adapted to replace the value of $RANDOM_XDG_VAR with
"$XDG_RANDOM_XDG_VAR" in directory paths when saving them. (Note: if I'm
correct recently a new XDG variable was added. This means that the
Ubuntu One servers should support all different XDG variables on all
supported Ubuntu releases. This is a bit too much. Two possible
solutions: one: send the unmodified path to the U1 server as well as a
fall-back; two: determine a group of variables that U1 supports. I'm in
favour of the first.)
