I've been investigating this, and can reproduce it, but so far I have been unable to reproduce it in a sufficiently controlled environment to allow me to actually debug it. It looks as if strings are getting un- null-terminated somehow, but I have not so far been able to determine whether this is happening within cdebconf itself or whether it's within newt or slang2 or somewhere else.
