Started when upgraded to 9.10 when it was still in beta around October or November 2009.
I figure it is not Ubuntu specific but rather something to do with the new Xorg system (with all the FDI's) or something with the kernel. As it does not just affect Ubuntu but OpenSUSE and other "newer" distributions as well. The workaround is to enable mouse taps and use that instead of the buttons. I know it sucks!
