I forgot to mention: newer versions of XZ Utils of course also have
various minor API changes, new translatable strings, and new command
line options, so I assume this would require a freeze exception or
someone back-porting the packaging changes only.

If neither of those happen, could you remove the current xz-utils binary
package from Karmic?  This would avoid confusion (the package should not
be installed), and that way, users would be more likely to find some
non-broken version from a PPA.  If you are the wrong people to ask,
please pass on this request.
