I just installed Karmic an old home PC and had problems with audio recording. This somewhat fixed it for me.
Something extra that needed to be activated was external amplifier, I think. It is still unstable as hell, changing the audio volume during playback, triggers a loud static. -- can't record from Mic same mic works fine on Vista computer.
