Switching to vt7 does indeed let me enter the passphrase.  The text mode
handling is a bit messed up, with the prompt being reprinted for every
keypress I type, so that eventually it's repeated N times down the
screen.

After that I do get to the recovery menu, which is good.

However, if I choose 'resume normal startup', the machine comes up to
multiuser mode, but it does not start X.  I'm just left on vt7 in text
mode.  I can then switch to vt1 and log in.  I verified there that gdm
was not running at all.  If I do 'sudo service gdm start' then it does
come up properly.  This might be a separate bug?
