Using mainline kernel 2.6.32.8 results in the same sort of corruption,
but it appears to be somewhat less pronounced.  Unfortunately, the
corruption also blew up the kernel itself, so the system could no longer
boot.  Since further blind experimentation seems pointless, I've
reinstalled Kubuntu 9.04 until I receive some further suggestions
regarding steps to try next.
