Public bug reported:

Sorry for this bug report being more vague than I could wish, but this
freezing problem is making the system unusable.

At some random moment during heavy screen paints, everything stops
responding except the mouse pointer. Windows may be left partly
painted. I can still move the mouse pointer, but that's all. The
pointer does not change shape in response to moving into and out of text
areas or hovering over links or anything else. No keys work-- ctrl-alt-
backspace, ctrl-alt-F1, and so on do nothing. Mouse buttons also do
nothing. I had this freeze happen while dragging a terminal window
around when nothing else was running, and other times when using only
Firefox.

I did not encounter this problem in the Feb 13 iso of Xubuntu, and I
think the Feb 25 build was good too. The Feb 25 build started having
this problem after I ran the update packages utility and updated
everything except the kernel. (That's another prob-- reason I didn't
update the kernel was because I had put the /boot directory on a
separate partition of only 32M, which the distribution upgrade utility
complained was too small.) So I got Herd 5 and reinstalled. And
encoutered the same problem with freezing.

OS: Xubuntu 7 Herd 5, x64 version. System: Intel DG965RY motherboard
with E6300 Core 2 Duo, Nvidia GEForce 7100 graphics chip.

** Affects: Ubuntu
     Importance: Undecided
