As far as I can tell on the W510 the only way to get at the CMOS battery is to nearly completely disassemble the machine. Not sure I'm comfortable doing that and risking my warranty, unless I can find some documentation somewhere telling me that it is definitely a task that won't void it.
Just for everyone's information I tried upgrading to the latest ALSA just to see if it would make a difference - wasn't expecting it to, and it didn't.
