Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pulseaudio

Every few hours I notice that PulseAudio has started maxing CPU usage on
one core. Killing it with a normal SIGTERM restores normality. Although
I have had comparable problems in the past with earlier versions of
Ubuntu, it was only quite recently that the current spate started,
perhaps a few days or a couple of weeks.

This bug sounds in some respects like
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pulseaudio/+bug/478658.
However I haven't noticed any other application being heavy on the CPU
(apart from X and Firefox, but that's normal). In any case I can't think
what other application could be involved, since Skype is inactive, audio
and video applications are not loaded, and browsers aren't playing any
media (using or not using Flash plugin). That said, even though I
generally don't have Flash loaded in Firefox (I have FlashBlock),
sometimes I have Flash loaded, but inactive, in an instance of Prism,
however I didn't have Prism running when the misbehaviour started this
afternoon.
