status triaged This does indeed also break VTs. Strangely, there's different behaviour when multiple monitors are plugged in - in that case, even with nouveau on fb1, I got plymouth splash. In this case, X would *sometimes* fail. The VTs were still broken even when X came up.
Inserting updates/nouveau/lbm_nouveau.ko into /lib/modules/$(uname -r)/modules.order before vga16fb results in both plymouth and X working correctly. All the in-tree KMS drivers get this for free (which is why vga16fb doesn't claim fb0 and break *them*); we need to work out how to get nouveau inserted in there. dmesg logs attached of the three cases - 1 head, no plymouth, dual-head plymouth, broken X, and a fully-working boot with lbm_nouveau in modules.order. ** Attachment added: "blank-screen-on-startup-working-X.dmesg" http://launchpadlibrarian.net/40020956/blank-screen-on-startup-working-X.dmesg ** Attachment added: "dual-head:plymouth-on-startup-broken-X.dmesg" http://launchpadlibrarian.net/40020959/dual-head%3Aplymouth-on-startup-broken-X.dmesg ** Attachment added: "working-plymouth-and-x-with-modules.order.dmesg" http://launchpadlibrarian.net/40020960/working-plymouth-and-x-with-modules.order.dmesg ** Changed in: linux-backports-modules-2.6.32 (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed => Triaged -- Nouveau interacts badly with vga16fb - blank screen before X https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/530451 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list [email protected] https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
