I appreciate your responsiveness, but please read my report more
carefully. The problem recurs in an entirely different system:
different powersupply, motherboard, RAM, CPU. So it's either an X fault
or a problem with the card itself. I've never seen a failing video card
bring the system down, and the timing was coincidental with the landing
of new X.org code in Edgy, so I'm leaning toward the former (with
appropriate hesitation given the unreproducibility of the problem).
It's possible that this has the same root cause as bug #54650, but
please leave it open in the meantime until I'm able to collect more
data. I'd like to hear about it if anyone else is experiencing a
similar problem.
