Robert, you can download and burn a Lucid live-cd here:
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/lucid/alpha-3/ Then boot from the CD
and see if the sound works (make sure the volume settings are correct
before you try).

However Daniel's suggestion would give you the absolute newest sound
driver snapshot so that would probably be even better.
