I was advised to give the output of the following command:
sudo fuser -v /dev/dsp* /dev/snd/* /dev/audio* /dev/mixer* /dev/seq*
The output is:
USER PID ACCESS COMMAND
/dev/snd/controlC0: alexander 3797 F.... knotify4
alexander 3816 F.... kmix
