Public bug reported:

I upgraded from Karmic to Lucid alpha3 on a 64 bit machine where my ati
4850hd was working well with "fglrx" proprietary driver ; after upgrade
I got a low resolution error message though that let me open both kde or
gnome sessions ; I tried to install the "fglrx" proprietary driver which
did not work ; I unintalled the package and removed all packages from
distro related to "fglrx" ; i installed the ati package from distro and
could get my ati 4850hd graphic card to work but from this point on no
way to open a kde session : the desktop starts to open showing the first
icon of the series of icon that normally display when the process goes
well and then fails to go any further as I am back to logging ; what is
wrong as I do not get any error message ?

I experienced a similar problem when ugrading KDE from KDE 4.3.4 to KDE
4.3.95 on another machine ; I could not either open a kde session but
use all kde applications from gnome.

As there is no coherent way to safely remove KDE I had to reinstall
everything to get KDE to work ; I hope Iwill not have to the same on my
machine where Lucid alpha3 is running.
