It has been a while since I followed up on this bug report. I removed Ubuntu from the machine in question and tried Debian instead, and neither the stable nor the testing builds were 100% stable on this machine. Just as a test I replaced Debian with Windows 7. This has not proved 100% reliable either on the machine, with occasional blue screen errors. At this point I suspect there is a hardware fault somewhere in the CPU or motherboard of this machine. I have not seen this bug on any of my other Ubuntu machines.
