I confirm this bug with my mother too. Absolutely same symptoms: shutting down ubuntu on a stage of updating packages left the system with 'wont boot' state the next morning, which was VERY surprising to me since I already got used to stability in ubuntu updates. The update was interrupted via shutdown from GNOME user menu.
