I had the same problem on my parents computer running Dapper. I couldn't
access some https sites.
I fixed it doing:
apt-get install --reinstall firefox libnspr4 libnss3
Too bad I didn't spend more time troubleshooting, but I needed https to
work... Even the launchpad URL for this issue I couldn't browse.
I have some more information though. I noticed that while the issue was
there, no master certificates (authorities) would be listed under the
tab that supposedly displays them in the preferences panel. Once fixed,
the list of authorities appeared again.
Things I would advice if someone else encounters the issue, before
applying the fix above:
- start firefox from the terminal when you still have the issue. Maybe
it will print a warning/error here.
- try creating a new profile and see if the issue is also available.
- run
ldd /usr/lib/firefox/firefox-bin
before and after the reinstall, save and compare each results
- make a backup of the firefox libs (cp -ar /usr/lib/firefox ~/firefox-
backup) before doing the apt-get thingy and compare it to the new
install)
Hope that helps...
