Okay, so I looked *closely* at the gnome-volume-control-applet and that is *NOT* the same as what should be showing in the indicator-applet section. As previously mentioned, my Acer AMD64 and Dell Mini 9 are showing the *correct* sound icon in the indicator applet section, and if I run 'gnome-volume-control-applet', I get two similar, yet clearly different sound speaker icons in my panel. So, I think this takes the issue back to being hardware related, as I believe Steve Langasek has this problem and he runs a Thinkpad as well.
