The goal of this transition is to synchronize ruby libraries with what
is shipped in Debian. In particular, in Ubuntu, we have currently a mix
of source packages providing 1.9.0 binary packages, and 1.9.1 binary
packages, making it essentially useless.

For the Debian counterpart, see http://wiki.debian.org/Ruby191Transition

There's at least one more round coming, and possibly another one after
that to fix the remaining problems.
