I have the same problem and the same workaround mentioned above had been
bringing the icons back, but they disappear again after closing the
nautilus window, and nautilus should continue to run in the background,
but it's not. See my 3 comments below. The last line of output from
running that first command happens immediately when closing the nautilus
window.
