  I get virtually no sound output when using pulseaudio, running rhythmbox

  I have not been able to get any usable sound output since installing a
  Karmic alpha version - today I noticed faint output from running
  Rhythmbox playing very loud music.
  
  This is a dual-boot system - I just booted into Debian Lenny to make
  sure the hardware is working.
