After upgrade to kernel 2.6.32-16 and installing the PPAs suggested the overall system behavior improved. The boot process begins with the purple Ubuntu screen then the image is shrinked to about 1/4 and moved to the left upper corner. Then The GDM screen comes up and restores the graphics. From this point on everything works okay. The problem persists after the computer is put to sleep. On 1 out of 3 attempts the screen is frozen. The system however seems alive - it responds to pings.
