I also ran into bug #518352: When booting without the splash argument gnome-session is on tty1. When I hit return it logs me out. After logging in again gnome-session then is on tty7. When booting with the splash argument gnome-session is on tty7. (I have to hit ctrl+alt+F7 to see the desktop in this case; I am initially presented with a text console.). When I hit return it also logs me out. So this bug here is independent of bug #518352.
