This is partly a Rhythmbox problem and partly a theme problem. The Rhythmbox problem is that it has always regarded "Play" as something you turn on and off, rather than as the opposite of "Pause" (bug 71228).
The theme problem is that menus should have checkmarks, not checkboxes, i.e. should not be cluttered by checkbox borders.
