The default method of xboard installation adds an system menu item in
"Application -> Games", but when I try to select "xboard" from the menu,
I have got the same quite disturbing and misleading message. Which makes
Application -> Games ->XBoard totalyl useless -- it does not anything
except displaying error message.

This can be fixed by any of the following :

1. checking if "gnuchess" is installed and adding "-ncp" parameter to the
command line if not.
2. requiring "gnuchess" installation along with the xboard installation
3. removing "Applications -> Games -> XBoard" menu item, so people can have fun
with the command line parameters

** Changed in: xboard (Ubuntu)
