Then I got errors trying to Eject the iPOD; the errors were appended to the 
existing Warning dialog, and said
"Error opening ..."   See gtkpod_errors_ejecting.png for details.

This happened when I tried (rightclick ipod in gtkpod)->Eject iPod

Incidentally, it appears that the ipod is mounted as expected:
$ mount
...
/dev/sdb1 on /media/JIM'S IPOD type vfat 
(rw,nosuid,nodev,uhelper=devkit,uid=2000,gid=2000,shortname=mixed,dmask=0077,utf8=1,flush)
