Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and help to improve
Ubuntu.
The error message in the upgrade log is:
Setting up linux-image-2.6.31-19-generic (2.6.31-19.56) ...
Running depmod.
update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-2.6.31-19-generic
Running postinst hook script /sbin/update-grub.
Searching for GRUB installation directory ... found: /boot/grub
/etc/default/grub: line 1: unexpected EOF while looking for matching `"'
User postinst hook script [/sbin/update-grub] exited with value 2
This indicates that you have edited /etc/default/grub on your system and
introduced invalid syntax - specifically, a missing double quote at the
end of a variable value ("). This is, therefore, not a bug in grub.
If you have questions about how to correct /etc/default/grub on your
system, I recommend consulting ubuntuforums.org for assistance.
** Changed in: grub (Ubuntu)
Status: New => Invalid
