Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

Starting anything from the menu fails and kills the panel. This also
stops all keyboard shortcuts from working.

I can restart the panel with the "gnome-panel --replace &" command, but
closing the terminal window kills the panel again, and the original
symptoms remain.

This occurred after and update I did about 4-5 hours ago.
