Tried VESA, no success (it never worked for me asi i said). Anyway I cannot edit xorg.conf if it's a livecd, I have chosen safe vesa in the boot menu.
The main ubuntu bug isn't that the X server doesn't start. It's that the screen goes back to "Loading Linux Kernel..." instead of showing at least a console or an error message.
