Thanks for your report, Noel. I believe you are right about gdm. I think it's more probably about how/when gdm gets started. I also believe you are seeing scan codes that are being sent to X and that a getty/login session is also running on /dev/tty1 and is getting confused. In LP: #532047 the confusion may be between X and the plymouth daemon. Are you seeing occasional crashes when pressing certain keys by any chance? If so that might relate to LP: #529230.
If I'm correct your photo may help track these problems down.
