Well, something like
\makeatletter
\ifx\writestat...@undefined@
...
\makeatother
would probably protect against these errors, I mean, isn't it still
good practice to use some @ in internal command names ...
Or some \l...@original...
As for now I can imagine *many* usages of \undefined as normal command,
but as of now we make it impossible to be used as soon as graphicx
package is loaded (maybe some others).
Please, make that a bit more robust!!
What does it cost us do use something that 99% of normal TeX documents
will *NOT* use as command names?
