"apt-get upgrade" after a fresh install of Ubuntu 9.1 to a USB device gives this error as well. Like n3ls0n said, its because grub doesn't install to the MBR and is instead stored on the pendrive. I'm going to poke around in the config files and cross my fingers that this didn't break the default grub config setup by usb-creator-gtk. It probably did, though.
