I'm having the same problem. I can close firefox and it will disappear
from the screen but there's still a process which I need to kill before
I can start firefox again. Interestingly I won't get any error message
in the console. Firefox just won't start till I have deleted that
leftover process.

This is stil there after I have closed firefox:
$ ps ax | grep fire
 2931 ?        Sl     2:10 /usr/lib/firefox-3.5.8/firefox
 3092 pts/0    S+     0:00 grep fire
$ kill 2931
and then I can start a new one.
