Following instructions for a GDB backtrace I obtained this result. The
lockup occurred when shutting down evolution while a new email
composition was in progress.

This was a second attempt at trying to reproduce the problem while
running evolution under control of GDB. Although this crash is not
exactly what I was trying to capture (send/receive lockup while
composing an email message) evolution did crash while trying to shutdown
the program.

I have also noted a problem with Evolution locking up during startup
immediately after launching from the control panel. In this case, there
are no emails from the Inbox displayed and instead there is a blank
white surface where the emails are normally displayed and then Evolution
fades to gray scale and never responds. Termination of the program is
required to recover and a new instance must be launched from the control
panel.

I have discussed this problem with a friend and the exact same problem
is occurring on the 32-bit distribution of the latest Ubuntu with
Evolution (lockup during send/receive while composing an email).

I will continue trying to capture the backtrace with GDB for the exact
issue reported and will post if I have any success.
