I had the problem too in 9.10 but was too lazy to report it (shame on me) Now I have installed ubuntu 10.04 and with Kernel 2.6.32-15 it works, but with the newer Kernel 2.6.32-16 it does not !
I have tried the above workarounds #14 (resetting xorg, but I am unsure if this really works for the new xorg ?) and above #27 (changing lid.sh).
